  • How A Fixed Mindset Imprisons Us (And What Can We Do Instead)

Posted by Jef Menguin on April 11, 2024 at 4:09 pm

A fixed mindset is when people think their abilities can’t change. They believe they’re born with a certain amount of intelligence, and that’s it. This way of thinking stops them from trying new things.

People who have a fixed mindset avoid challenges. They’re scared to fail. If they try and don’t succeed, they think it means they’re not smart or good enough. So, they don’t even try.

They also give up easily. If they find something hard, they think it means they can’t do it at all. They stop trying and miss the chance to learn.

Feedback and criticism are tough for them, too. They take it personally. Instead of learning from it, they get upset. They can’t see it as a chance to grow.

People with a fixed mindset feel threatened by others’ success. They think if someone else is doing well, it makes them look bad. This stops them from learning from others.

All these things keep people with a fixed mindset stuck. They don’t grow or reach their full potential. They miss out on so much because they’re afraid to change and try.

But there’s another way: the growth mindset. It’s about believing you can develop your abilities with effort and learning. Let’s explore how a growth mindset can open up new possibilities and help us grow.
